The first time I heard about "book excerpts" was probably about two years ago on Christine's (Polandbananasbooks) Booktube channel. Of course at the time I thought this was the coolest thing ever, not knowing about the magic that is ARCs yet. An exclusive preview for a book that hasn't been released yet? Sign me up!
However, my enthusiasm for excerpts quickly went down hill after I heard Kat (Katytastic on booktube) explain why she wasn't a fan of excerpts at all.
Now, I'm someone who has a love/hate relationship with excerpts (as you may have been able to tell by the title.) There are many reasons why I can't help but appreciate excerpts. Yet, there are also many reasons why I can't help but despise excerpts.
So what are the pro's and con's of excerpts?
You can get a feel for the author's writing style
Sometime's the first few pages may be a determining factor for whether you're going to buy the book or not.
You get a feel for the characters. Maybe the main character is unbelievably annoying and an excerpt of the book saves you from enduring their horrible personality? That's worst case scenario, though.
The first *insert however many pages/chapters of the book are provided* get you so sucked into the story it physically hurts to not read more.
The excerpt ends on a dramatic part.
"Is that all?!?!" you ask to yourself.
If you can think of any more pro's and con's please feel free to tell me in the comments!
Sometimes it's just a better decision to wait for the full book. But excerpts have definitely been useful as far as finding potentially amazing books as well. Plus, sometimes you can't resist the temptation of an excerpt. We're only human, right?
Thanks for reading and have a lovely day!
